Classic Recreations' Shelby GT500CR Carbon brings 1,000 hp to SEMA

Classic Recreations has brought a carbon-bodied version of its Shelby GT500CR to the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. The company describes it as the first officially licensed 1967 Shelby GT500 build with a carbon-fibre body. The car made its debut at the Concours at Wynn Las Vegas and is being shown at SEMA on the FuelTech stand in the Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center.

The build starts with an original Mustang donor car, which is then re-engineered almost entirely. The light carbon body sits on a Detroit Speed chassis with Aluma-Frame front suspension, Quadralink rear suspension and adaptive Nitron shock absorbers.

Supercharged Coyote and carbon throughout

Power comes from a Gen 4X 5.0-litre Ford Coyote V8 built by Wegner, fitted with a 3.0-litre Whipple supercharger and tuned to 1,000 hp. It drives the rear wheels through a Suncoast 10-speed automatic, a carbon-fibre driveshaft from Panhandle Driveline and a Ford 9-inch rear axle with a Gear FX 8.8 centre section. The carbon theme continues with Brembo CCM-R carbon-ceramic brakes and Forgeline Carbon Grudge wheels on Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres.

The cabin keeps the 1967 layout but adds a Dakota Digital instrument cluster, Scheel-Mann seats, Vintage Air air conditioning, Dynamat insulation and an audio system with Focal K2 speakers, a Mosconi amplifier and an Alpine head unit.

Price and ownership

The full GT500CR Carbon build starts at around $750,000. Classic Recreations also offers less powerful carbon-bodied versions with different equipment from $550,000, and a steel-bodied GT500CR from $450,000. The SEMA appearance is the firm's first since it came under the ownership of Velocity Restorations. The cars are built in Pensacola, Florida.
