Ford Mustang
Ford unveiled the Mustang in April 1964 at the New York World's Fair under the direction of Lee Iacocca. Built using shared mechanical components from the compact Falcon to keep production costs low, the model created the "pony car" segment: a long hood, short rear decklid, and a broad options list that allowed buyers to configure anything from a basic inline-six commuter to a V8-powered sports coupe. Sales surpassed 400,000 units in its first year, establishing the Mustang as an immediate commercial success.
Across seven generations, the vehicle adapted to shifting emissions standards and market demands, spanning the lightweight Fox-body platforms of the 1980s, the retro-inspired S197 in 2005, and the sixth-generation S550 in 2015. The S550 marked a fundamental engineering transition for the brand, replacing the traditional live rear axle with an independent rear suspension and turning the Mustang into a global model distributed directly in right-hand-drive markets worldwide.
The seventh-generation S650 generation maintains the traditional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, offering an updated 5.0-liter "Coyote" V8 alongside a 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder. While Ford expanded the nameplate to include the all-electric Mustang Mach-E crossover, the traditional two-door coupe and convertible remain in production, headlined by high-output performance models such as the Dark Horse and the GTD.

Facts
The sixth-generation 2015 Mustang was the first broadly produced generation of the model with independent rear suspension as part of its standard architecture.
For 2011, the Mustang GT gained the new-generation 5.0-litre Coyote V8 producing more than 400 hp.
In 1996, Ford's 4.6-litre Modular V8 replaced the previous 5.0-litre V8 in Mustang GT and SVT Cobra models.
In 2004, Mustang production moved from the Dearborn plant to Flat Rock after roughly four decades at its original factory.
The Mustang GT badge returned in 1982 after a twelve-year absence.
In 1969, two notable performance variants joined the lineup: the Boss 302 and Boss 429.
In 1965, Ford and Carroll Shelby developed the road-racing-oriented Mustang GT350, lighter and more track-focused than the standard car.
The limited-production Mustang SVT Cobra debuted in 1993 as one of the early products of Ford's Special Vehicle Team.
In 1984, Ford introduced the limited-production Mustang SVO, developed by its Special Vehicle Operations group.
The 1979 Mustang moved to the Fox platform, beginning a long-running generation with distinctly more European proportions.
