Renault considers limited-run 8 Gordini after electric 5 Turbo 3E

Renault has not approved the 8 Gordini Concept for production, but the company is open to a small series of electric sports cars inspired by it. Renault brand chief Fabrice Cambolive told Autocar that a Gordini-related project could be considered after the company has sold the 5 Turbo 3E and begun delivering customer cars.

That is a possibility rather than a confirmed model programme. Renault still describes the existing 8 Gordini Concept as a one-off show car that will eventually be displayed at its planned Renault Collections museum in Flins. Any subsequent limited-run sports car would be a further project, not an automatically approved production version of the prototype on display.

Electric power for a historic formula

Renault introduced the two-seat 8 Gordini Concept on 24 September 2026, ahead of an appearance at the October Paris motor show. The design combines a rear-wheel-drive electric powertrain, quoted at 270 metric horsepower, with proportions and details recalling the original Renault 8 Gordini.

The first 8 Gordini arrived in 1964 as a performance derivative of a modest rear-engined saloon. Its affordability and competition success helped establish the Gordini identity. The electric concept borrows the idea of a compact, engaging rear-drive car without attempting to reproduce the mechanical layout of its petrol-engined predecessor.

The design was developed within Renault rather than commissioned from an outside designer or coachbuilder. Renault has so far presented it as an exploration of heritage and driving character, with a place planned in the marque's future museum rather than in a price list.

The 5 Turbo 3E must come first

Cambolive's comments establish a clear order of priorities. Renault needs to sell the 5 Turbo 3E and deliver the first examples before evaluating another low-volume electric performance model. He has also spoken of developing the company's ability to produce small, entertaining sports cars rather than concentrating solely on familiar badges.

No production target, launch date, price or definitive engineering specification has been announced for a future Gordini. The manufacturer has not confirmed that such a car would retain the show car's exact name or bodywork.

The development on 13 October is therefore the chief executive's willingness to discuss a potential next step after the 5 Turbo 3E. It should not be mistaken for a second launch of the already revealed one-off concept.
