De Tomaso reveals production-spec P72 six years after concept debut

De Tomaso has revealed the final production specification of the P72, six years after the concept first appeared at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed. The company has kept the retro-futuristic shape largely intact, but the important change is that the long-running project has finally moved from show-car status to a specification intended for customers.

The P72 remains deliberately analogue. A supercharged 5.0-litre V8 producing about 700 hp is paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. The cabin uses an exposed shift linkage and avoids a central touchscreen. Carbon-fibre bodywork and a carbon monocoque are combined with pushrod suspension and manually adjustable dampers.

Production is limited to 72 cars. De Tomaso lists pricing from €1.6 million before taxes and shipping, and says the allocation is sold out. The design references the 1965 P70 associated with Alejandro de Tomaso and Carroll Shelby, although the new car is a modern supercar built around a contemporary carbon structure.

This reveal matters because it is more than another appearance by a prototype. The P72 became the first model of the revived De Tomaso to reach a final road-going production specification, closing an unusually long gap between a dramatic concept debut and a car actually intended to be delivered.
