BMW Concept 7 Protection previews discreet handgun-resistant luxury sedan

BMW has revealed the Concept 7 Protection, an armoured luxury saloon intended for people who need protection against particular threats without moving to the highest category of security vehicle. Based on the 7 Series, it is designed to look and behave much like an ordinary flagship BMW. The essential differences are integrated into its body structure.

The concept sits below the production BMW 7 Series Protection, which has VR9 certification. BMW instead describes a new BayB standard covering selected handgun ammunition, including 9 × 19 mm and .44 Magnum. That is a narrower proposition than protection against rifles or explosive devices. The company says customers facing blast threats require a more heavily protected vehicle.

Security equipment hidden in plain sight

Ballistic steel and fibre-reinforced composite components are built into the doors, supported by thicker bullet-resistant glazing. Particular attention has been given to gaps and junctions around doors, windows and the body. Reinforcement extends to the rear quarter windows and passenger-compartment bulkheads.

Even the panoramic glass roof conceals an armour layer beneath its conventional exterior. Its interior blind therefore has to stay permanently closed. Side windows can still move electrically, but cannot be lowered all the way. An intercom makes it possible to speak to people outside while keeping the doors shut, and a separate attack alarm can provide audible and visual warnings.

BMW says the brakes, suspension, powertrain and driver assistance systems have been calibrated together to accommodate the protective equipment, rather than simply adding armour to a completed road car.

Plug-in hybrid hardware, uncertain production

The demonstrator uses the M760e xDrive mechanical package. A 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine works with an electric motor and all-wheel drive, producing a combined 450 kW, or 612 metric horsepower, and 800 Nm of torque.

BMW also uses the concept to introduce an Individual rear console with a folding worktable, wireless charging and a cool box. That console is scheduled for availability on 7 Series models in the second half of 2027. The date does not, however, establish a production timetable for the Concept 7 Protection.

Selected European markets are the initial focus for a possible expansion of BMW's lower-profile protective vehicle range. The manufacturer has yet to announce an order date, price or confirmed series-production programme for this concept.
