Bentley Bentayga X Concept tests demand for a more serious off-roader

Bentley has revealed the Bentayga X Concept at the FAT Ice Race in Zell am See. The company is not presenting it as a confirmed production model. Instead, the concept is intended to gather feedback on a more off-road-focused Bentayga and test whether that direction belongs in the range.

The starting point is a Bentayga Speed with a 650 PS 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, permanent all-wheel drive and an eight-speed transmission. Air suspension works with Bentley's 48-volt Dynamic Ride active anti-roll system. The most important changes, however, concern its stance and ground clearance.

Track width has increased by 120 mm and ride height by 55 mm. Bentley quotes a wading depth of more than 550 mm. The concept also uses one-piece forged 22-inch Brixton wheels with high-profile off-road tyres, making the functional intent immediately visible.

There is additional equipment intended for outdoor use, but the more interesting point is Bentley's stated purpose for the project. The company explicitly says the X Concept was developed to stimulate feedback. It is therefore more than a show-only winter-event build, although there is no production commitment yet.

Bentley has previously stretched the Bentayga in two clear directions: rear-seat luxury with the Extended Wheelbase and maximum road performance with the Speed. X Concept explores a third, giving the SUV substantially more off-road ability without abandoning the powertrain and active chassis hardware of the performance model.
