1965 Le Mans-winning Ferrari 250 LM sells for €34.88 million

Ferrari 250 LM chassis 5893, the car that won the 1965 24 Hours of Le Mans, has sold through RM Sotheby's in Paris for €34.88 million. It is a result driven not simply by model rarity, but by the history of one particular chassis.

The car won Le Mans for Luigi Chinetti's North American Racing Team with Masten Gregory and Jochen Rindt. The victory completed Ferrari's run of six consecutive overall wins at Le Mans, and chassis 5893 remains the only privately entered Ferrari ever to win the race outright.

RM Sotheby's says the car retains its matching-numbers engine and gearbox. After its racing career it entered the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, where it remained for 54 years. Before retirement, it had competed in six 24-hour races, including three editions each of Le Mans and Daytona.

Ferrari built only 32 examples of the 250 LM. That limited production, combined with originality, long museum provenance and the strongest possible competition result, puts chassis 5893 in a different tier from most collector Ferraris. The €34.88 million sale made its Le Mans victory a central part of one of the year's largest public collector-car transactions.
