Jaguar D-Type

The racing D-type developed roughly 270 bhp from an evolved Jaguar XK inline-six engine.

The D-type used an advanced monocoque rear body structure combined with a front subframe carrying the engine and suspension.

In May 1954, the D-type prototype improved the Le Mans test-session lap record by about five seconds.

On October 13, 1956, Jaguar announced its withdrawal from factory racing, although privately entered D-types continued to succeed.

The tall fin behind the driver's head became one of the most recognizable aerodynamic features of later D-types.

The D-type won the 24 Hours of Le Mans three years in a row: 1955, 1956 and 1957.

After Jaguar's works effort wound down, private team Ecurie Ecosse won Le Mans with D-types in 1956 and 1957.
